LUBBOCK — In their final rodeo of the fall semester, the Eastern New Mexico men’s and women’s teams made it their best.
The men took sixth place in team standings, while the women finished eighth at the weekend Texas Tech Rodeo.
In total, five ENMU rodeoers made the short round in Lubbock, the top finisher freshman Logan Hyatt. The Stockton, Alabama native finished second in the average for steer wrestling — part of a 170-point effort for the ENMU men.
Hyatt made the short round with a fifth-place long round finish of 4.8 seconds. He shaved the time down to 4.5 seconds in the short go to move up three spots.
Stran Thompson was the other point scorer for the ENMU men, finishing fifth in the calf roping average — 9.8 seconds in the long go, 10.6 in the short go.
Three members of the women’s team qualified for the short go, with sophomore Timber Kelley scoring the team’s 55 points with a tie for first in the goat tying long round. She finished outside of the average after the short go.
Senior Laney Elkins was sixth in the long round in barrel racing, and sophomore Molly Griffin tied for eighth in breakaway roping in the long go. Neither placed in the average after the short go.
Women’s hoops drops exhibition — The Greyhound women’s basketball team probably wasn’t going to fare well against Division I Arizona in any scenario. But cold shooting did not help.
The Greyhounds started the game 1-of-14 from the field with seven turnovers, and the Wildcats never looked back in an 88-31 win.
The Wildcats led 44-16 at the break, and shot 59 percent (36-of-61) on the night.
Sophomore Chelsea Hunter led the Greyhounds with seven points, while Dasia Johnson and Zamorye Cox each added five.
Eastern has another exhibition in Albuquerque, 2 p.m. Sunday against New Mexico.
