Our Clovis Municipal Schools Education Foundation is now in its 10th year. Initiated through the efforts of then-superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm, the foundation has flourished over the years.
While members have come and gone and committee memberships have shifted, the underlying commonality is a unified belief in loyalty to and support of our school district by those who are a part of it, directly or indirectly.
Our foundation funds a wide range of things: teacher grants; technology; staff development; economic and/or special needs of students; interactive learning experiences; school/community partnership programs; student/teacher recognition programs; author and/or artist-in-residence programs; permanent endowment funds; and endowed scholarships for students.
As I work throughout the district I daily see the wonderful benefits for our students resulting from our education foundation. While tax dollars fund the major needs, the foundation bridges the gap for those things we’re unable to cover with conventional funds.
One of the special Education Foundation events is the “Purple Pride Hall of Honor Banquet” honoring distinguished Clovis High School alumni. Over the years we’ve celebrated a number of CHS alumni who’ve demonstrated outstanding success on both the national and international stage in the areas of government and service; business and industry; and sports and entertainment.
Now, once again, it’s time to nominate individuals to receive this honor. Pause a moment and reflect; talk to your friends, family members, acquaintances and consider former CHS alumni who should be nominated for this honor. It may very well not be the lively, social student always in the forefront, but rather that shy, unassuming student who quietly went on to persevere and blaze the way to success in their field.
In this day and age of seemingly perpetual conflict, we need heroes to look up to; not only to celebrate, but to point out to our children and grandchildren; to show the enormous potential that resides in us all.
It’s increasingly important to acknowledge those who have gone on to shine in their areas of expertise. Denis Waitley, author of “Seeds of Greatness,” said: “Success is almost totally dependent upon drive and persistence; the extra energy required to make another effort or try another approach is the secret of winning.”
