CLOVIS — Clovis High School had a brief lockdown Monday afternoon, and two teens were arrested in an incident that started with a plastic imitation gun.
According to a release from the Clovis Police Department, officers were dispatched to CHS about 1 p.m. in reference to a subject with a firearm. School staff advised a parent had reported seeing a male student with a gray and black hooded sweatshirt and a gray backpack and a firearm in his waistband.
The report put the school into a Level 1 lockdown, where instruction continues but all entrances are locked. The lockdown was lifted at 1:07 p.m.
According to information supplied by Capt. Roman Romero of the CPD:
n Units from the CPD, Curry County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police arrived on the scene at 1:03, and by 1:05 found a subject matching the description in the center of the school.
• The suspect, a 17-year-old male, was taken into custody and charged with the delinquent act of interference with the educational process.
The juvenile remained in custody Tuesday according to the Curry County Jail’s online inmate lookup, but no charge or bond information was available.
• A black imitation handgun was recovered from the juvenile.
• A second student, Jeramiah Maes, was taken into custody.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Curry County Magistrate Court, an officer was speaking with a witness when Maes, 18, walked by and called the witness a “(expletive) snitch.” The officer detained Maes, reasoning in the report that Maes decided to include himself in the investigation.
It was discovered Maes had an outstanding warrant for larceny, criminal damage and residential burglary. He was arrested for the warrant, and also charged with intimidation of a witness.
Maes, 18, remained in the Curry County Adult Detention Center Tuesday and had his initial appearance in magistrate court Tuesday afternoon. Bond information was not available, and it was not known if Maes had an attorney.
