ABILENE, Texas — Longtime fans of Eastern New Mexico will fondly remember a time when the Abilene Christian Wildcats were a Lone Star Conference rival and the teams usually had a pair of close battles annually.
That was then, this is now. The Wildcats, now in Division-I, certainly played the part Saturday, jumping out to a 24-8 first-quarter advantage en route to a 78-46 rout to hand the Greyhounds their first defeat of the season.
Breanna Wright scored 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting to lead four in double figures for the Wildcats (3-0), who never trailed and led by as many as 36 in the game’s closing minutes.
Sara Williamson had 15 points, while Alyssa Adams had 14 and Dominique Lightly 10. Lexie Ducat scored just four points, but had a game-high 13 boards.
Nobody reached double figures for the Greyhounds (2-1), though nine different players registered points. Treyanna Clay was the Greyhounds’ top scorer with eight points, while Alivia Lewis had seven. Both pulled down four rebounds.
Eastern will head to the home of a current LSC rival this weekend to play a pair of non-conference games. They’ll be at the West Texas A&M Thanksgiving Classic, with a pair of 11 a.m. matchups Friday against Colorado State-Pueblo and Saturday against New Mexico Highlands. The Greyhounds defeated the Cowgirls 66-38 at Greyhound Arena two Fridays ago in the season opener for both teams.
