Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
SANTA FE — Even the most optimistic of Portales fans would honestly tell you there’s no way to know just how good the Ram girls team will be or how it will compete in Class 4A come February and March.
But early indications are Portales can certainly compete with what the Santa Fe Tournament had to offer. The Rams moved their record to .500, and set themselves up for a Saturday night title showdown with Robertson after a pair of lopsided wins over St. Michael’s and Santa Fe.
Senior Taylee Rippee led the way in both games for Portales, posting a combined 40 points in the 67-40 win Thursday over St. Michael’s and the 49-26 drubbing of Santa Fe.
But she had plenty of help throughout, with Alexis Ryen netting a career-high 12 points against St. Michael’s and a career-high 13 rebounds against Santa Fe.
“The two teams we’ve played aren’t Clovis and Estacado, but at the same time, we’ve improved,” Fraze said after Friday’s win over Santa Fe. “We still struggle at times. We had 23 in the first quarter and four in the second. But that’s youth.”
Against St. MIchael’s, Fraze credited the defensive effort of Teagan Faust, Taris Rippee and Mattison Blakey on Sia Alvarez, who scored 10 in the first and had 12 of the Horsemen’s first 14 points but had just six points the rest of the way.
Guard Kinzie Davis had six points against St. Michael’s, and against Santa Fe had a career-high 10 rebounds on a scoreless night.
Portales is back in action Tuesday, as it heads back north to take on West Las Vegas.
