Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
BELEN — Clovis might have gone into Saturday’s meet at Belen a little shorthanded, but the people who did swim had a pretty good Saturday.
Clovis coach Gordy Westerburg said most of the Wildcat swimmers finished first in their competition or just behind a teammate who did while picking up eight new state qualifying marks during the meet.
Clovis brought just 14 swimmers — 11 girls, three boys — but still managed to finish third in the girls competition and sixth out of 10 teams in the boys field.
“We got beat because of numbers, but we won two of the three (girls) relays,” Westerburg said. “We feel good about the state meet.”
The eight qualifying times were split among five girls — Bella Zamora (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Barrett Bryant (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Hannah Luscombe (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Anya Hammond (500 freestyle) and Shyann Kissinger (200 freestyle).
Clovis is back in action after the holidays, and heads to Andrews Jan. 4-5.
