Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — The city of Clovis has joined four other communities with designation as a Great American Defense Community by the Association of Defense Communities, according to a release from the city.
The 2019 class includes Clovis, Bay County, Florida; Greater Columbia Region, South Carolina; Middle Georgia region; and the North Country-Ford Drum Region of New York.
“Defined by a mission of force and family, readiness and resilience, America’s defense communities are the foundation of our military’s strength,” Association of Defense Communities President Bill Parry said. “The communities we recognize through the Great American Defense Communities program represent the best examples of what communities can do to create great places for our military families to live and work. We congratulate these five communities and look forward to sharing your stories with the nation.”
Clovis is being recognized for various military related programs provided and supported by individuals and organizations in the community, including Cannon Appreciation Day, the nursing program at Clovis Community College, Angel Arms, Cannon Newcomer’s Tour, and other veterans’ support programs.
“It’s an incredible honor for the Clovis community to be recognized as a Great American Defense Community,” Clovis Mayor David Lansford said. “Military communities around the country are privileged to share our lives with the men and women who uphold American values and are willing to place other lives and freedoms above their own.”
The five regions were chosen from applicants that were home to active military installations, and had supporting nominations from members of Congress who represented the community. Clovis applied with a nomination from the entire New Mexico congressional delegation in late October.
The Clovis city commission unanimously approved applying for the designation during its Oct. 18 meeting. Prior to the vote, Lansford said he felt Clovis stood a good chance to receive the honor and that it would be a major designation if received.
