Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Three area prep football players were selected as the state’s best, regardless of classification, as part of the All-USA New Mexico Football Team, announced by USA Today High School Sports.
Players were selected based on their athletic achievements from the 2018-19 season.
Clovis had a pair of first-teamers, with senior Stephen Acosta a first-team offensive lineman and senior Montez Wright a first-team defensive back.
Portales junior Romeo Gbassagee was named to the second-team defense in a lineman position.
Class 6A state champion La Cueva was honored with Brandon Back as the coach of the year and Blaine Smith as the defensive player of the year. Smith posted 48 tackles and six interceptions for the Bears, who finished 13-0 and beat Cleveland 33-14 in the title game. The Bears had six selections overall.
Cleveland’s Dorian Lewis was selected as offensive player of the year. Despite suffering a knee injury late in the regular season, Lewis ran for 1,583 yards and 20 touchdowns with 10 receptions for 117 yards and four more scores. Lewis was also named Gatorade Player of the Year for New Mexico. The Storm also had six selections.
