Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
PORTALES - The Portales Municipal Schools Board of Education had a bit larger crowd than normal on Monday, moving its monthly meeting to the junior high cafeteria to account for the dozens of exemplary and highly effective teachers honored by the board.
Superintendent Johnnie Cain said assessment scores, surveys, teacher attendance, professionalism and principal evaluations go into determining each teacher's evaluation.
"I believe that if a student is learning and they are growing educationally and socially and emotionally, that is what we need to happen in the classroom," Cain said. "An effective teacher makes sure that happens in our classroom every day. But even though I've said that an effective teacher is what we need, there are always the overachievers that want to be better."
The district had 75 teachers who earned exemplary or highly effective status.
Board members Antonio Sanchez and Rod Savage were absent.
Also at Monday's meeting:
• Cain's contract was extended one year, now running through June 30, 2021.
• The board approved an application to sell $2 million in bonds.
• The board selected members Inez Rodriguez and Alan Garrett to serve again on the district's budget committee.
• The board selected April 24 as the date for the board's senior honors banquet.
