United Way to continue TEFAP food distributions

PORTALES — The United Way of Eastern New Mexico will continue with local TEFAP, or The Emergency Food Assistance Program, food distributions in 2019, with the first scheduled for Saturday at Central Christian Church in Portales, 1528 S. Main.

UWENM Executive Director Erinn Burch said the TEFAP distributions served about 200 families a month last year.

Burch said qualified families will receive about four to give bags of groceries, including items like canned goods, cereal, produce and frozen meat.

Burch said the program targets low-income residents with a threshold of $44,000 in annual income for a household of four.

She said the food distribution is a collaborative effort between The Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico, the Ministerial Alliance, Central Christian Church, with the majority of the food for the program coming from the USDA.

Saturday’s distribution will be scheduled by last name, with A through G from 9 a.m.-9:30 a.m., H-N from 9:30 a.m.-10 a.m., O-Z from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and new applicants from 10:30 a.m.-11 a.m.
