Portales council to consider joint powers agreement with county

PORTALES — The Portales City Council will consider whether or not to terminate a joint powers agreement with Roosevelt County during Tuesday’s meeting.

Portales City Manager Sammy Standefer said currently the Portales Police Department is housed in a building owned by the county, with the JPA serving like a lease agreement.

Standefer said the police department will be moving into a new building, so the council will be tasked with considering the termination of the agreement.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the Memorial Building:

• Following a public hearing, the board will vote on an ordinance that would allow Local Economic Development Act funds to be put toward projects in arts and cultural districts.

The adoption of the ordinance would be subject to voter approval, with a proclamation calling for a special election on April 4 also included on the agenda.

Standefer said taxes would not increase if the ordinance is approved.

• Winners of the city’s bi-annual cleanest yard contest will be announced.

• Randy E. Lee, an equipment operator in the street department, will be recognized for his retirement.
