Indoor track begins

Three school records fall due to Moinat efforts.

LUBBOCK — Eastern New Mexico junior Ivar Moinat got a hot start to what is a short indoor track and field season, breaking two school records and helping break a third at the Red Raider Invitational at Texas Tech University.

Moinat finished second in the 400-meter at 48.74 and fourth in the 800-meter at 1:51.51, and then teamed up with Trevonne Armstead, Brandon Chavez and Andrew Villegas to go 3:18.22 in the 4-by-400 relay.

In other high marks for ENMU competitors:

• Shane Walsh set a new personal record at 8:58.66 in the 3,000-meter finals, placing him third overall. He also went 19th in the mile run at 4:35.

• Senior Danee Bustos finished fifth overall in the women’s 400, crossing the finish line in 56.97. She also teamed up in the 4-by-400 with Kiana Covington, Mason Swanson and Kandice Miles to finish 16th.

• Senior Mercy Rotich took fourth in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:44.48.

The Greyhounds may want to get used to Lubbock. They’ll be back Feb. 1-2 for the Texas Tech Open and Feb. 16-17 for the Lone Star Conference championships.

The only other two meets left for the indoor season are the Don Kirby Elite Invitational Feb. 8-9 in Albuquerque and the Division II national meet March 8-9 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

The men finished fourth in the conference championships last year, while the women were fifth.
