Clovis teams pull split

Girls rout Borger, boys fall again to Volcano Vista

BORGER, Texas — Clovis’ girls basketball team needed a win Saturday. Heading across the border with a 6-11 record, the Lady Wildcats could see their season fading a bit.

Then came their visit to the Lone Star State, where they jumped out early and routed Borger 66-35.

The Lady ’Cats already led 14-8 after one quarter, then overwhelmed Borger 18-4 in the second to take a 32-12 halftime lead.

Clovis kept the pressure on throughout the second half and rolled to the 31-point win.

Clovis’ Annabelle Martinez led all scorers with 14 points, including three treys, the Wildcats’ only buckets from beyond the arc.

Mikyla Harkley tossed in 13 points for the Lady ’Cats, followed by Kaydee Weaver with 11. Antanishwa Molett and Madison Tolbert chipped in with nine points each.

Jayli Hood paced Borger with eight points.

Clovis hosted Artesia on Tuesday and will visit Portales on Friday (5:30 p.m.) before opening District 4-5A play at Carlsbad next Tuesday.

Volcano erupts

ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis’ boys basketball team had a chance at revenge Saturday, when the Wildcats played the Volcano Vista team that had beaten them in the championship game of their holiday tournament a few weekends earlier at Rock Staubus Gymnasium.

But there was no revenge to be had. Volcano won again, this time by a 55-37 count at Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque.

It was close after one, with the Hawks leading just 12-8. By halftime it was still anyone’s game, as Volcano clung to a 28-24 advantage.

But the Hawks outscored the ’Cats 13-4 in the third quarter, soaring to a 41-28 lead. In the second half overall, Volcano Vista outscored Clovis 27-13 to salt the game away.

Dion Battle led Volcano with 21 points on seven three-pointers. He was the only Hawk in double figures.

Dewayne Dawson had that distinction for Clovis, scoring 11 points.

Clovis hosted Goddard on Tuesday and will host Artesia on Friday (7 p.m.) before starting district play next Tuesday against Carlsbad at the Rock.
