Clovis girls suffer pair of district losses

The first week of District 4-5A play was not terribly kind to the Clovis girls basketball team, who dropped a pair on the road — 40-13 at Carlsbad Tuesday and 77-34 at Hobbs Friday.

Not-so-Super-Tuesday

CARLSBAD — Carlsbad extended its winning streak to 13 games with its 27-point home win over Clovis in the district opener for both teams.

The Cavegirls had a terrible start to the game, beginning with a 3-0 lead and going into the half trailing by four, 13-9.

Carlsbad got a little 3-point happy in the first half. The Cavegirls made just four field goals in the first half and were 1-for-15 from the 3-point line during that span. They shot 13-of-39 (33 percent) from the field for the entire game, committing 10 turnovers and 19 fouls.

Carlsbad went on a 12-0 run to start the second half before Clovis scored. The Lady Wildcats were shut out in the fourth quarter, and overall, the Cavegirls outscored Clovis 27-4 in the half.

Carlsbad did a much better job of shot selection in the second half, going 4-for-6 from the 3-point line in the second half.

“We were just settling on 3s and weren’t going to the hole,” Carlsbad senior Dayshawn Moore on the first half struggles. “We weren’t focused at the beginning. We were just thinking we were going to stomp on them and they came and beat us (in the first half). They bit us in the butt with their defense. We just weren’t getting any shots whatsoever.”

TGIF? Well, maybe not

HOBBS — Clovis was hoping to even its district record at 1-1, but instead dropped to 0-2 district, 7-15 overall.

While the Lady Wildcats managed to somewhat contain Carlsbad’s multi-faceted offense on Tuesday, Hobbs was able to pump out the points throughout Friday’s game, ringing up 77, an average of 19.3 per quarter.

A tough week indeed for the young and undersized Lady Wildcats, but there is good news. They have a week off to try and regroup, and then this coming Friday, they will play their first district home game when hosting Roswell at 7 p.m.
