SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico softball team played well enough to win on offense with 16 runs on 21 hits in their two St. Mary’s Classic games on Friday.
For the most part, they played well enough to win on defense, but giving up a six-run sixth inning cost them a tournament-opening sweep.
Still, Eastern managed a split with an 8-0 win over New Mexico Highlands and a 9-8 setback to Drury.
The Greyhounds (3-3) were scheduled to play St. Edward’s Saturday and Regis Sunday, and make their home debut Monday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands.
Against New Mexico Highlands: Senior Kimberly Herron pitched her second career shutout, giving up just five hits over six innings against the Cowgirls. The game was called after six due to the mercy rule.
Karina Moreno and Iliana Mendoza each went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while right fielder Kayla Marshall was 2-for-4 with an RBI. No Greyhound drew a walk against Highlands pitching, but Jennifer McElroy, Samantha Brockman, Emma Gary and Elysa Rodirguez all had doubles.
Against Drury: Brockman went 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch, and the Greyhounds got two runs each from Brockman, Marshall and Haleigh Behncke. No other information was available on the game.
