Lawmakers consider new way to pick regents
The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce issued its weekly "Legislative Report" on Thursday.
It points out that a Senate Joint Resolution seeks an amendment to the Constitution concerning how university regents are selected.
Currently the responsibility rests solely with the governor followed by confirmation of the Legislature. This measure would give the Legislature the responsibility for selecting the committee that would have no more than 50 percent of one party. The committee would vet potential regents then send three names to the governor for consideration.
If passed, the measure would be on the November ballot for voters to consider.
• Also from the Roosevelt Chamber: House Bill 31 and Senate Bill 437, two very different bills seeking a hike in minimum wage in New Mexico are scheduled for debate in the Senate Public Affairs Committee on Saturday. ... HB 31 seeks to hike the rate to $12 over two years with future indexed raises after that. SB 437 is less aggressive and caps at $10 an hour.
