Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
I have three words for this weekend: chili, brisket, music.
Chili and brisket are the main courses at two food-based fundraisers (my favorite kind) on tap for our area.
The Kiwanis Club of Portales has been dishing up its “heart-healthy” chili for more than half a century.
Volunteers will be tying on aprons in the kitchen in Portales’ First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Ave. C, Friday afternoon making the late George Calton’s recipe for the 55th time.
Stop by the church fellowship hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and you can savor the tasty results. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under, whether you dine in or carry out.
The best part … well, actually, the third best part, because the best part is visiting with everyone who is there and the second best part is the chili … is that all of the profits stay right here.
They’re used for some wonderful traditions benefiting our local youth like the Roosevelt County Fair pet show and the annual summer swim meet at the city pool.
If you need more information, call Kiwanis member Dorothy Glover at 575-714-7780.
A boatload of briskets will be sliced up this weekend for a benefit dinner for Brittany Kanmore, a 20-year-old Portales woman who has been hospitalized in Lubbock since Jan. 31 following a serious auto accident near Clovis.
Friends of the Kanmore family are hosting the meal, which will be served from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Commons Area at the New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home, 2200 S. Ave. I, Portales. (Watch for signs once you get on campus.)
Kanmore is a familiar face to many in eastern New Mexico. The 2016 graduate of Dora School is a full-time student at Clovis Community College and works at Landall’s in Portales and Absolutely You in Clovis.
Jolie Foster, one of the organizers for the event, said there is no set price for the benefit meal — donations of any size are welcome.
Foster said a number of silent auction items will also be sold that day, and local auctioneer Kendell Terry will be on hand to peddle desserts as part of the event.
Want to lend a hand? Bring a dessert to be sold, or come with your sleeves rolled up.
“If people show up who can help serve or clean up, we will put them to work,” Foster said.
If you’d like to know more, call Foster at 575-760-2215.
Finally, serve that chili and brisket with a side of culture … or two.
Eastern New Mexico University’s jazz musicians and Swanee Singers are joining talents for a concert at 7 p.m. Thursday in Buchanan Hall in the school’s music building.
At 7 p.m. Friday in the same venue, Chris Adkins, principal cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, is slated for a guest recital with ENMU’s collaborative pianist, Kayla Paulk.
Both events are free.
Delectable food, worthy causes, heart-lifting music. It’s a fine weekend on the High Plains.
