The meeting of the Portales Women’s Club was called to order by President Amber Hamilton on February 13th. The pledges, collect and invocation were led by the President.
There were 19 members present and Deena White was introduced as a new member. The minutes were approved and the treasurer’s report was filed for audit.
Three executive board recommendations were approved: to return the fireplace heater to Valley Furniture, to approve the scholarship committee’s revised criteria and to endorse Samantha Bartl for the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs (GFWC) New Mexico Harriett Donohoo/Dorothy Pendleton scholarship.
June Ferguson and Sheryl Borden volunteered to select a book to be presented to the Portales Public Library in memory of Mary Blakley, a longtime member of the club.
A nominating committee for 2019-2020 officers was elected: Wanda Pettus, Gloria Waggoner, Betsy Chavez, Kristen Kuhlmann and Jessica Comacho.
Cindy Miller distributed a signup sheet for members to deliver Meals on Wheels for March.
Following the business meeting, the president explained that the club would discuss two issues concerning the club building and the club’s association with GFWC-NM and GFWC-International. Noelle Bartl facilitated the discussion, and Gloria Waggoner and Sheryl Borden presented the pros and cons for each issue. Kristen Kuhlman moved that the club building be retained and that a process for selling the building be explored. The motion carried. Jan Smartnick moved that PWC retain its association with GFWC-NM and GFWC-Int’l. and that a dues increase be determined by the Executive Board. This motion was seconded and it carried. The meeting adjourned and the next meeting will be on March 13.
