PORTALES — A pair of Greyhounds are heading to the Division II national indoor championships, as senior Danee Bustos and junior Ivar Moinat both got invites on Tuesday.
The Division II national meet, scheduled for March 8-9 at Pittsburg State, does not give any automatic bids to conference champions. Competitors are made up of a field of automatic qualifiers, and provisional selections who make certain benchmarks at any meet throughout the season.
Moinat, who finished third in the 800-meter at 1:51.01 in the Lone Star Conference championships, had a personal best time this season of 1:50.68. That ended up being the 11th-fastest time in Division II. A total of 16 were invited in the event.
Bustos had to sweat out her invite a little bit more in the 200-meter. She finished second in the LSC championships with a 24.47, good for second place at the meet and the No. 19 time in Division II.
“Ivar we were sure of, and Danee was kind of on the bubble,” Greyhound coach Jeff Kavalunas said. “How many they take in that field varies every year. They took 20 this year, which was good.”
Both athletes had trained under the assumption they would be selected.
Once they finish the indoor national meet, they’ll alter the training schedule to be ready for the outdoor season. That starts at home March 23 with the second annual ENMU Greyhound Open. Eastern will also host the LSC championships May 2-4.
