ENMU sweeps Pioneers to even LSC softball mark

DENTON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico posted its first sweep of Texas Woman’s University in 17 years Sunday, as the Greyhounds posted four runs in the seventh to seal a 6-1 victory in Sunday’s series finale.

Kimberly Herron improved to 4-3 on the year, and pitched two of the Greyhounds’ three complete game victories as the Greyhounds (7-7, 3-3) moved to .500 in Lone Star Conference play for the first time this season.

The Greyhounds swept a doubleheader held Saturday, winning the opener 11-7 and the nightcap 4-2 with Herron on the mound.

Herron allowed three runs, two of them earned, in her 14 innings of work.

On Sunday, she scattered eight hits over seven innings, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Iliana Mendoza went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and a run scored in the seventh.

In Saturday’s nightcap, Herron also allowed eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts. She at one point retired nine Pioneer hitters in a row, starting with a 4-3 double play that ended a bases-loaded threat in the fifth to keep the Texas Woman’s lead at 2-0.

That might have been a key momentum point for the Greyhounds, who took control with a four-run sixth that included RBI singles by Herron, Samantha Brockman, Elysa Rodriguez and Karina Moreno. The Greyhounds got five hits in the inning, drew a walk and a hit-by-pitch and chased starter Bailey Turner. Brittney Hitt gave up a pair of RBI singles after coming in with the bases loaded, but got a pair of groundouts to limit the damage.

The Greyhounds scored nine runs over the middle three innings to take control in the opener, with Rodriguez leading the offensive charge. She finished the game 4-fot-5 with four RBIs, including an RBI single during a three-run third, a two-run homer in Eastern’s four-run fourth and the Greyhounds’ final run on a seventh-inning single.

Designated hitter Emma Gary went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs, including an RBI single to start the scoring in the third and a bases-loaded hit-by pitch in the fifth.

Hanna Gary pitched the complete game, allowing seven runs on 11 hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Sydney Johnson was 3-for-4 for the Pioneers in the opener, including a two-run single in the second and an RBI double in the seventh.

The Greyhounds resume the season at home 6 p.m. Friday against Texas-Permian Basin.
