Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
The U.S. Navy Concert Band performs for free Saturday night in Clovis’ Marshall Auditorium. It’s part of its 10-state, 25-city tour for 2019.
Considered one of the service’s “signature outreach programs,” the Navy Band is based in Washington, D.C., and its wind-ensemble concert band has for over 90 years toured annually “to reach out to audiences in areas of the country that do not have opportunities to see the Navy’s premier musical ensembles on a regular basis,” according to promoters.
The tour started Feb. 20 in Virginia and reaches Clovis for the 7 p.m. show this weekend. Tickets are free, but registration online is requested at:

• New Mexico lawmakers might draw a state salary — for the first time — under a proposed constitutional amendment that passed the House on Wednesday. The Albuquerque Journal reports the proposal, if approved by the Senate, would ask voters to decide whether to establish an independent salary commission to determine the pay of the governor, lawmakers, statewide officials and judges. Under the current system, New Mexico legislators are reimbursed for some expenses and draw "per diem" payments during the session or when attending interim meetings, not a set salary.
• Also from the Albuquerque Journal: A bill that would expand New Mexico background check requirements to nearly all gun sales is headed to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s desk for final approval. The state Senate on Wednesday voted to sign off on House changes to the legislation, Senate Bill 8, that stem from a clerical error in a committee document. Lujan Grisham, a Democrat who took office in January, supports the legislation and has indicated she will sign it once it arrives on her desk.
