Eastern player honored

FRISCO, TEXAS — Treyanna Clay led Eastern New Mexico in scoring in her lone season after transferring from Division-I Iona, including double-figure scoring in 22 consecutive games to end the regular season.

The Lone Star Conference took notice Wednesday, naming Clay the conference’s newcomer of the year and a first-team All-LSC selection.

The awards were announced on the eve of the conference’s basketball tournaments.

Clay averaged 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game for the Greyhounds, who fell Friday night against Texas A&M-Commerce in the tournament’s opening round.

It’s the second-straight year that the Greyhound women had a player earn an individual award. Former Greyhound Kaylee Edgmon was the LSC’s top freshman last year.

Clay was joined on the first year by Player of the Year Lexy Hightower and teammate Tyesha Taylor of West Texas A&M, Defensive Player of the Year Marquita Daniels (Angelo State) and Tarleton State’s Mackenzie Hailey.

Cameron’s Maighan Hedge was named freshman of the year.

Honorable mentions for the Greyhound were senior Shelby Jones and sophomore Olivia Lewis, a three-time defensive player of the week and the LSC’s leading rebounder in the regular season (251). Lewis was also one of five players named to the All-Academic team.

In men’s honors, sophomore Devin Pullum was named a second-team All-LSC member, with senior teammates Chukuka Emili and Zach Parker receiving honorable mention.

The Buffs had Player of the Year Ryan Quaid and Freshman of the Year Qua Grant on the first team, where they were joined by Tarleton State’s Josh Hawley, Texas-Permian Basin’s Jacob Ledoux and Willie Rooks of Texas A&M-Commerce. Hawley was the defensive player of the year, while Ledoux was the newcomer of the year.

Coaching honors went to WT, with Tom Brown claiming the men’s award and Kristen Mattio getting the women’s honor. Conference academic players of the year were Jesse Hill of Tarleton State and Tarleton State’s Katie Webster.

With the exception of the academic awards, voted on by LSC sports information directors, all LSC awards are determined by a vote of coaches.
