Fort Sumner to play Maxwell today in 1A semis
BERNALILLO — Last season’s Class 2A champion is two wins away from pulling the same feat in this year’s Class 1A bracket.
Noah Maxwell led all scorers with 19 points, and second-seeded Fort Sumner dominated the second half for a 69-36 victory over New Mexico School for the Deaf at Bernalillo High School.
The Foxes (22-8), who move on to a 1:15 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal against third-seeded Maxwell at the Santa Ana Star Center, pulled away with a 25-10 third quarter after the Roadrunners (22-6) played them to a 22-18 first half.
In a game where neither team shot particularly well, going a combined 40-of-113 from the field, the Foxes posted advantages on the boards (45-38) and had just nine turnovers to NMSD’s 26.
Jude Segura scored 17 points, while Cody Terrell added 10. In total, eight of the 10 Foxes who saw playing time scored at least three points.
Bruce Brewer scored 13 to lead the Roadrunners, who brought an 11-game winning streak into the quarterfinal.
The third-seeded Bears cruised past Tatum 61-33.
Thursday’s winner will face either top-seeded Quemado or No. 5 Melrose in the 6 p.m. Saturday championship game at The Pit.
