Clovis track teams take fourth in Amarillo

AMARILLO — The Clovis boys track and field team was on a tear, seeming like it couldn’t be beaten.

But tough competition is tough competition, and there was even more of it for the Wildcats in this past weekend’s Amarillo Relays at Dick Bivins Stadium. As a result, the Clovis boys placed fourth with 54 points, behind Tascosa (176), host Amarillo (156.50) and Randall (56).

Clovis’ girls also took fourth, ringing up 48 points. The Lady Wildcats were behind Amarillo (174), Canyon (145) and Tascosa (83).

Clovis did get two individual firsts, one from each team. T.J. Gregg won the boys 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:29.27; Mikyla Harkley won the girls triple jump, notching a distance of 38 feet, 2 inches. Each athlete earned 10 points for the Clovis cause.

Wildcat senior Montez Wright finished second in the boys 200-meter dash, posting a time of 22.56 that was good for eight points. Wright also took fourth in the boys 100-meter dash, notching a time of 11.14 (four points).

Darion Morgan-Haskins had Clovis’ only individual third, which he tallied in the boys triple jump (42 feet, 11 inches), earning six points for the Wildcats.

Clovis’ girls 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams each took third, posting respective times of 1:45.15 and 4:09.09. Each earned 12 points for the Lady Wildcats.

Other top-six finishers for Clovis were: Pacer Hill, fourth in the pole vault (13-06); the girls 4x100-meter relay team, fourth (50.07); the boys 4x200-meter relay team, sixth (1:33.75); and the boys 4x400 relay team, sixth (3:32.23).

Clovis’ boys don’t return to action until April 12, when they compete at the George Love Relays in Portales (3 p.m.).

The Lady Wildcats compete again a bit sooner, taking part in the Gene Wells Relays at Hobbs on April 5 (3:30 p.m.).

They’ll all be at Leon Williams Stadium on April 18 for the Wildcat Relays.
