Rams top Santa Fe to win St. Mike's Invite

SANTA FE — It doesn’t always take a powerful hitting performance to get wins in prep baseball. Sometimes, and especially early in the season, just putting the ball in play is enough.

That’s what happened in Santa Fe over the weekend, as the Portales Rams turned around the young season with a 4-1 win over Santa Fe High Saturday to claim the St. Mike’s Invite.

Entering the road tournament, the Rams (3-2) had been winless with just three runs scored. The last three games in Santa Fe, however, saw Portales score 20 runs on 21 hits.

“Our first two games, we struck out 28 times,” Portales coach Dusty Nusser said. “Up at the tournament, we only struck out 15 times. That gives you more chances to get on base.”

Nusser said the Rams took advantage of Demons errors and mostly reached via seeing eye singles. Jordan Garcia had a two-run single in the three-run third that broke it open for Portales.

The Rams are again dealing with a loaded schedule this week. They were due to head to Moriarty Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader, then return home to host the Portales Invitational Thursday through Sunday.
