Portales school board approves calendar

PORTALES - The Portales Municipal School Board of Education approved the 2019-20 district calendar during Monday's meeting. And while students may not like the big change the board made come August, they likely will appreciate it in October.

Assistant Superintendent Henry Montano said the calendar for the upcoming school year is similar to the district's current calendar, with the biggest change being an additional day off for students in October.

Montano said that extra day will be added to the beginning of the school year, with the first day of classes scheduled for Aug. 5.

In other items related to the upcoming school year, the board approved applications for pre-K and bilingual multicultural education funding.

Superintendent Johnnie Cain said the preschool application includes an expansion from 100 students to 110 students.

School board member Randy Rankin was absent.

Also at Monday's meeting:

• Following an approximately 50-minute executive session, the school board selected recipients for the PMS board of education scholarship and DuPoy scholarship and a nomination for the New Mexico School Boards Association scholarship.

Cain said the scholarship recipients will be announced at the Portales High School scholarship awards assembly, scheduled for 6 p.m. May 8 at the PHS Performing Art Center.

• The board approved an agreement with La Casa Family Dental to provide dental services to Portales students.

David Briseno, the director of outreach for La Casa, said 429 students received dental services last year.

• The board recognized elementary, junior high and high school winners of the Destination Imagination competition and Rae Ruiz, an eighth grader who won the state Patriots Pen essay competition.
