Ten named all-state

Texico, Melrose each have pair of first-team selections.

A total of 10 area players, were named to the New Mexico High School Coaches Association all-state teams, with five players receiving first-team designation.

A total of 100 players across the state were honored, with a first team and second team of five players each in all five classifications for boys and girls. Players were selected by a vote of coaches from around the state.

Players of any grade are eligible for the all-state teams, unlike all-star teams limited to seniors.

Texico and Melrose each had a first-team selection in boys and girls. Texico placed Dalton Thatcher and Baylee Sours on the Class 3A first teams, while the Buffs' Tate Sorgen and Nataley Mondragon were on the Class 1A first teams.

Jude Segura of Fort Sumner was also named to the 1A first team, with Noah Maxwell named to the second team.

Melrose's Tristan Sena was a second-team 1A selection for boys, and local girls second-team selections were Ashley Hill of Texico and Kiki Roybal and Hailey Martin of Melrose.

Rams put four on 4-4A team - When the District 4-4A season started, the Portales girls basketball team was clearly the youngest of the four-team field.

Once it ended, Portales was also the most decorated team, with four players making the all-district team.

Senior Taylee Rippee led the way, claiming MVP honors on the 11-person team, released this week by Portales coach Wade Fraze.

Joining Rippee were sophomores Mattison Blakey and Alexis Ryen and freshman Taris Rippee.

District runnerup Artesia had three selections - Brehnan Davis, Paityn Houghtaling and Kyrah Gonzales. Lovington and Goddard had two selections each - Riley Mapes and Haley Marquez for Lovinton, and Bailey Beene and Alexis Sandoval from Goddard.
