Busy schedules for Eastern teams

SILVER CITY — Behind a huge hitting series from Emma Gary, the nightmare streak for Eastern New Mexico University softball is over.

The Greyhounds posted a Saturday sweep of Western New Mexico, 7-5 and 7-2, to take two of three in the series and end a 17-game skid.

Gary went 5-for-6 with four RBIs, including a two-run pinch-hit homer in the sixth inning of Saturday’s opener to keep the Mustangs at bay. She also had RBI singles in the third and seventh innings of the second game.

Sister Hanna Gary played a part in both wins on the mound. She took the save with a scoreless seventh in the opener to preserve Kimberly Herron’s winning effort of five runs on 10 hits in six innings. The nightcap saw Hanna Gary allow two runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort.

Shortstop Elysa Rodriguez went 5-for-8 on the day, including a 3-for-4 opener with two runs scored.

The Hounds return to action Thursday with a 6 p.m. series opener against No. 21 Tarleton State. The series will conclude with a 1 p.m. doubleheader which will also function as senior day.

Hounds win two at Ross Black — The Greyhound track team won a pair of events during the rain-shortened Ross Black Invitational at New Mexico Junior College.

Mercy Rotich picked up her third event win of the outdoor season, taking the 5,000-meter at 18:06.56.

Sophomore Louis Bolander took his first event victory, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal record of 10:15.12. The effort topped his previous personal best by more than eight seconds.

Other top finishers for the Greyhounds were Ivar Moinat in the 800 (fifth, 48.41), Maijah Mathis and Kandice Miles in the 100 (12.13 and 12.14 for seventh and eighth, respectively) and Teagan Mosely in 100 hurdles (17.28, seventh).

The Greyhounds head to Canyon Saturday for the West Texas A&M Twilight meet.

Thompson paces rodeo squad — The Greyhound men took 80 points on Saturday in Big Spring to take 11th in the Howard College Rodeo.

Freshman Stan Thompson was responsible for all of the points, finishing third in the average in team roping. He and South Plains College’s Kyler Bell posted times of 7.2 and 16.7 in the event.

Two members of the women’s team made the short go round in breakaway roping Junior Kennedy Smith registered a time of 2.9 seconds in the preliminary round, while Sage Bell was at 3.2 seconds. Neither could register a time in the finals.

The team is off this weekend, and heads to Stephenville next week for the Tarleton State Rodeo.

The camp is available for children in grades 1-6. Registration will be onsite 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m. Participants must supply their own athletic attire and sunscreen.
