ALBUQUERQUE — Dozens of graduating seniors got in their last action as high school basketball players Friday and Saturday as the New Mexico High School Coaches Association held its All-Star ceremonies at Manzano and Valley high schools. And though she didn’t come away with a win at the end, Portales’ Taylee Rippee may have had one of the biggest games.
Rippee had game highs of 17 points and nine rebounds, going 8-of-11 from the floor and hitting her only free throw attempts, but teh Large School Northwest team held off Rippee and the Southeast 79-73 in Saturday’s championship game.
Carlsbad’s Carsyn Boswell added 16 for the Southeast, while Julia Chavez of Rio Rancho had 16 points to lead the Northwest. Chavez and Rippee will share a court again a few months from now, as both are committed to play at Eastern New Mexico.
The Southeast defeated the Northeast 77-69 to reach the title game, while the Northwest topped the Southwest 78-69. The Southwest topped the Northeast 73-64 in the third-place game.
The athletes were divided into large school for Classes 4A and 5A and small school for classes 1A through 3A.
The small-school girls winner was the Southeast, a 68-55 winner over the Southwest. Third place went to Northwest, which topped Northeast 79-71.
In boys large school action, the Southwest defeated the Northeast 88-84 for the title. Northwest took the third-place game, 115-112 over the Southeast.
The small-school boys championship went to the Southeast, a 103-81 winner over the Northwest. The Northeast won the third-place game, topping Southwest 97-85.
