Some Relay for Life events set

PORTALES — There’s still no confirmed date for Portales’ Relay for Life. But a pair of preliminary events are already set, with the first coming Saturday to the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds.

“We’re having the Relay Relaunch, which is our kickoff,” organizer Mark Clark said of the event, which will run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “It’s a community expo — arts and crafts, home and garden. Any kind of organization can come out, set up a booth and show their support for the community.”

The event will be followed by a 7 p.m.-midnight dance on the fairgrounds’ concrete slab, though Clark said he’s still trying to finalize musicians for the event.

Although the Relay for Life event isn’t yet scheduled, it is listed on the American Cancer Society’s events page for Sept. 14. Clark said that will be the date of the mushball tournament. That tournament, Clark said, will raise money for Lubbock’s Hope Lodge. The hotel gives a free place for cancer patients visiting for treatment, along with their families.
