Holiday set to be a hot one

CLOVIS — The days leading up to the Independence Day holiday might give eastern New Mexico residents some pause.

Will it be a scorcher, like the weekend that preceded it? Will rain get in the way of things, like it did to some extend Monday?

The answer might be a little of both, according to National Weather Service predictions.

Meteorologist Alyssa Clements of the NWS’ Albuquerque bureau said the chances of precipitation will drop throughout the week, and temperatures will probably top out in the 90s throughout the remainder of the holiday week.

“For the Fourth, there is a 20 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms with a high temperatures of 95,” Clements said. “There will also be partly cloudy skies.”

Clements said the weekend might have a little bit of a cooldown with high temperatures dropping to the 80s. Conditions will probably be in the 90s through the following week. After that, predictabiilty goes down, but Clements felt it was safe to assume mid--to-late July would be hot.
