CLOVIS - A domestic disturbance on Saturday evening included reports of multiple shots fired, including one by police, officials said.
No one was injured, according to Clovis Police Chief Doug Ford.
New Mexico State Police announced Monday it is investigating the incident.
A standoff that lasted more than two hours began about 5 p.m. Saturday when Ford said police received a report of a domestic disturbance with shots fired at 2720 Wallace St.
Damon L. Smith, 42, of Clovis, was ultimately arrested and faces multiple criminal charges. He remained at the Curry County Adult Detention Center on Tuesday.
The NMSP referred all questions regarding the incident and any disciplinary actions on the officer to the CPD, which in turn referred all questions back to the NMSP. The state police said the officer's name would be released after interviews were complete later this week.
According to a Monday NMSP news release:
• Officers responded at 4:48 p.m. to a domestic dispute on the 2700 block of Wallace Street. They arrived to find Smith yelling at officers inside the residence.
• From the open front doorway, CPD officers gave Smith verbal commands to exit a room. Officers observed Smith walk out of a room and into the hallway holding a rifle.
• When Smith brandished the rifle toward the officers, one of the officers discharged his department-issued weapon. Officers retreated and waited for a special weapons and tactics team to arrive.
• The SWAT team negotiated with Smith, and eventually used a Taser to take him into custody. He was treated on scene by emergency personnel, then taken to the detention center.
• Smith faces charges of aggravated assault on a household member, aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting, evading or obstructing a peace officer.
It was not immediately known if Smith had an attorney.
