Portales crews battle structure fire on Avenue I

PORTALES — More than a half-dozen departments teamed up on a structure fire in the northeast area of Portales.

More than 50 firefighters from Portales, Clovis, Texico, Elida, Milnesand, Floyd, Arch, Dora and Causey departments battled the blaze on the 300 block of North Avenue I.

Portales Fire Department Battalion Chief Steven Cain said the call came in a few minutes after 10 p.m. and was under control a little less than three hours later. Crews were still watching hot spots on the building Sunday, Cain said. The building was considered a total loss, but no damage was reported to neighboring properties.

Numerous non-firefighting public and private entities helped provide aid, including BNSF closing the nearby railroad tracks, traffic control from the Portales, ENMU and state police departments and public works providing light towers and portable restroom facilities.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
