• Cal Ripken had played in his 1,208th consecutive Major League Baseball game, moving him into third place on the iron-man list behind Boston’s Everett Scott (1916-1925) and Lou Gehrig (1925-1939).

Steve Garvey predicted Ripken would not likely catch Gehrig. “The odds are against you,” Garvey told The Associated Press. “You run into a bout of flu. You can catch a cleat on artificial turf. Things happen.”

Ripken broke Gehrig’s consecutive-games record by more than 500 games, finishing with 2,632 in a row.
