CANYON, Texas — Friday night saw the Eastern New Mexico cross country teams begin their season, with the women fourth and the men sixth at West Texas A&M’s Buffalo Stampede.
The women’s side placed two of the top five runners in fourth-place finisher Aminata Kenyawani (15:30.1) and Evaline Cheptoo taking fifth (14:47.1) in the 4K race.
Overall for the women, who scored 90 points, four of the five scoring runners finished in the top half of the 67-team field.
Kayla Sisneros finished 16th (16:45.4), Lauren Griego 31st (17:41). Rounding out the Greyhound finishes were Caroline Bachman (18:17.6, 37th), Amalia Delgado (18:21.3, 38th) Viridiana Ruiz (18:28.4, 41st), Sierra Quinones (19:23.8, 54th), Esther Kipkoech (20:16.2, 60th), Tara Mayes (20:45.3, 63rd) and Elizabeth Mossay (21:02.8, 65th).
Lubbock Christian’s Amira Cunningham won the meet, crossing the finish line in 14:48.9,, but Colorado State-Pueble had the next two finishers to score 58 points and beat out host West Texas A&M (59) and LCU (68) for the team win.
For the men, Jessie Madrid finished 10th at 20:03.1 in the 6K race, while Clovis native Jon Fuentes finished 14th in his college debut at 20:17.8.
Also competing for the ENMU men were Alejandro Chavez (21:16.1, 30th), Ivar Moinat (21:31.2, 31st), Toby Kirk (24:11, 62nd), Shane Rinde (25:21.3, 65th).
The Buffaloes won the meet, with three of the top seven finishers and 40 team points to top Lubbock Christian (59). Wayland Baptist’s Dennis Kiptoo was medalist, finished in 19:06.2.
The teams will be off this week before heading to the Texas Tech Invitational Sept. 21.
