Five Greyhounds honored by Lone Star Conference

Women's soccer sweeps award slate.

RICHARDSON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico athletics had one of its best weeks as a member of the Lone Star Conference, at least according to the conference office.

Five Greyhounds received recognition as an LSC player of the week, with the women’s team sweeping all three player awards and the football team taking two of the three.

The women’s team is off to a program-best 3-0 start. Awards went to Desiree Morgas (offensive), Hayden Zuniga (defensive) and Whitney Dockweiler (goalkeeper). This is the first time in program history the women have swept all three conference awards.

The football team moved to 2-0 with a 44-37 overtime victory at Colorado Mesa. Honored were Wyatt Strand (offensive) and Quincy Arceneaux (defensive).

The conference accepts nominations from each school at the beginning of the week, and releases its choices for top players from each field and staggers the awards throughout the week — football on Mondays, volleyball and soccer on Tuesdays and cross country on Wednesdays.

According to the LSC releases:

n Strand, a senior quarterback from Logan, accounted for four total touchdowns, including the game-winning score on a six-yard rushing touchdown in overtime. He captained the Greyhound offense in a wild second half with two rushing touchdowns in the half to finish the night with 96 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns. Strand was also effective through the air, completing 6-of-12 passing attempts for 127 yards and a score. Strand and company totaled 561 yards of total offense, 434 of which came on the ground to record the team's second straight game with over 400 yards rushing.

n Arceneaux, a junior defensive end from Lafayette, Louisiana, recorded five tackles and returned a fumble 56 yards for a touchdown. The Greyhound defense allowed just 100 yards in the first half and limited the host Mavericks to 381 total yards for the game.

n Morgas, a sophomore midfielder from El Paso, had two goals and an assist in the Greyhounds’ two wins. She scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute against Fort Lewis to close the week after recording a goal and an assist against Adams State. She currently ranks third in the LSC in points this season.

n Zuniga, a junior defender from Sahuarita, Arizona, scored the game-winning goal against Adams State and anchored a backline that recorded two shutouts last week with wins over the Grizzlies and Fort Lewis. She played all 180 minutes in the two games, and marshaled the defense to allow just six total shots against ASU including just one shot on target.

n Dockweiler, a junior from Bellevue, Nebraska, recorded a pair of shutouts, stopping all nine shots she faced in two games. She was the only LSC goalkeeper to not allow a goal, and has yet to concede one this season.
