Mesa teacher awarded grant

CLOVIS — A Mesa Elementary School teacher was awarded a $1,000 grant from Intel and the Golden Apple Foundation, according to a release from Clovis Municipal Schools.

Fourth-grade teacher Silvia Miranda received a $1,000 grant in a competitive process.

According to the proposal, Miranda said the multi-day lesson would involve in-class talks with community members (doctor/nurse, waste management director, plumber, electrician, computer technician, veterinarian) about how they use STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematical) skills in their jobs. Students would then read about various global challenges and choose one to focus on.

Miranda was selected last year as a state winner from the Milliken Foundation.

United Way seeking volunteers

The United Way of Eastern New Mexico is seeking volunteers for its Reality Check program, according to a release from Clovis Municipal Schools.

The program offers a hands-on opportunity for high school freshmen to experience adult finances in the real world.

The United Way needs 35 volunteers during each session, with morning, afternoon or full-day opportunities.

Sessions will be Oct. 23, Nov. 20, Feb. 26 and March 18 at Clovis High School Freshman Academy, Jan. 15 and Feb. 12 at Portales High School and Oct. 2 at Eastern New Mexico University (rural schools).
