ENMU men's soccer cracks top 10

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico’s soccer teams are still undefeated, and the men’s team is still rising in the polls.

The men’s team, which set a new program mark last week at No. 13, now has surpassed that and moved to No. 9. The Greyhounds (6-0) are tied with Mercy College (5-0-1) for the position according to the United Soccer Coaches poll released Tuesday morning.

Adelphi remains No. 1 in the poll, which includes three Lone Star Conference schools — West Texas A&M at No. 4, ENMU tied for ninth and Texas A&M-International in the receiving votes category.

The Greyhounds are currently ranked second behind WT in the South Central Regional poll. The two teams will meet 6 p.m. Thursday at WT in the LSC opener for both teams.

University President Jeff Elwell and wife Edwina Gower are arranging a caravan to attend the Thursday game, with instructions to meet as a group at 4 p.m. at the Greyhound Arena parking lot.

The women remained undefeated, but fell from 10th to the receiving votes category in the latest South Central Regional poll. The Greyhounds are 3-0-1 following their scoreless tie Saturday against Southern Nazarene, and are the only LSC school not to allow a goal this season.

The national women’s poll features California-San Diego in first, with three LSC schools in the poll — Dallas Baptist 19th and Angelo State and Texas Woman’s receiving votes.

The Greyhound women also open the LSC season this week at WT, with their game 6 p.m. Friday.

Eastern New Mexico is one of just eight NCAA schools to have both their men’s and women’s teams undefeated at this point in the season. Division II Maryville is the only one of those schools without a tie in the records, with the men 6-0 and the women 4-0.
