ENMU women third, men 10th at College Daze

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico women's team finished in third place, while the men’s team finished 10th at the school’s annual ENMU “College Daze” Rodeo Thursday through Saturday.

The women’s points were all scored by newcomer Madelyn Schauer who finished third in the all-around competition despite scoring in only two events — barrel racing and goat tying. Eastern New Mexico finished just 10 points behind South Plains Junior College and 45 points behind team champion Sul Ross State.

Schauer placed third in the average in the barrel racing and fifth in the average in the goat tying. Fellow newcomer Tarren Washburn was the other Greyhound to qualify for the short round on Saturday night for Eastern New Mexico, securing a total of 70 points throughout the weekend in the team roping to push the Hounds to a 10th-place finish in the highly competitive field.

Washburn and his partner Garrett Baldwin of Cisco Junior College placed fourth in the long round after a time of 7.0 to earn 30 points for the Eastern team score. The duo came back in Saturday night's short go and posted a time of 16.1 to finish fifth in the average and earned 20 points for each round to bring their weekend total up to 70.

Schauer made the most of her opportunities on Saturday night, qualifying for the short go after splitting second and third in the long round in the goat tying and placing fourth in the long round in the barrel racing. She recorded times of 7.9 in the goat tying and 18.17 in the barrel racing in the long round before registering times of 10.1 and 17.8 on Saturday night in each event.

Those times placed her fifth in the average in the goat tying and third in the average in the barrel racing to finish up the weekend with 185 points for the team score.
