Letter to the editor - Sept. 29

Feels like I have less time than I need

I was going to title my letter “I don’t have time for this.”

It was going to be about how time is speeding up, and not just for my generation.

But for the sake of scientific accuracy, I guess I can’t say time itself is speeding up. So let us assume time is now as it always has been.

My husband and I had time, 37 years ago, to make ice cream in a vat, and we had time left over to play cards. In between games, our friend, Roy, tried to help our baby dance with his little baby feet on the table. It made us all laugh. We were easy to entertain.

This is not a harangue on today’s culture nor it’s preoccupation with sex and violence. We had that back then too.

And I’m not complaining about gadgets. I love them.

I’m not complaining about having access to hundreds of movie choices a night or millions of songs, operas, ballets, or documentaries either.

I’m just saying, I don’t have time for all that.

What I want to experience, and what is available to experience, at least vicariously, is more than I can fathom.

I feel like I did when I finally got to go to college at 30-something, and found out I wasn’t going to get to learn everything.

Talk about disappointment.

I’m just trying to figure out how to choose to spend the time I have, if indeed I should spend it. Maybe I should make it, or save it. Maybe I should waste a little of it when no one is looking.

At any rate, it’s time to decide what to do.
