Clovis commission to form task force

CLOVIS — Five companies have put their hat in the ring to be the new Essential Air Service provider at Clovis Municipal Airport, effective Feb. 1.

The Clovis city commission plans to make the decision less than three weeks from now between Advanced Air, Key Lime Air Corporation, Sky West Airlines, current provider Boutique Air and Contour Aviation, and plans to enlist a task force to help make that decision.

The only new business item on the Thursday city commission agenda is creation of a task force to review and interview applicants, then make a recommendation at the Oct. 22 commission meeting.

The U.S. Department of Transportation, which oversees the Federal Aviation Administration and the EAS program has requested the city review proposals and submit comments no later than Oct. 29.

Task force members suggested include:

• Commissioner Rube Render, the commission’s representative on the civil aviation board.

• Vince Tyson, representing the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce and Clovis Industrial Development Corporation.

• Donnie Lewellyn, president of the civil aviation board.

• James Burns, president of the Committee of 50.

• Debbie Abrego, representative for Southwest Cheese.

Additionally, City Manager Justin Howalt and Airport Director Josh Matekovic would serve in non-voting positions.

In other business at the Thursday meeting:

• The commission will meet prior to the meeting for a 4:45 p.m. executive session to discuss pending or threatened litigation.

• A radio room lease at the Clovis Municipal Airport for Cannon Air Force Base. The lease would continue CAFB’s lease of the 20 square foot room on an annual basis through June 30, 2024, at the rate of $1 per year. Cannon has leased the room since 2004.

• Appointment of Tom Martin and Gilbert Salguero to the parks, recreation and beautification committee.

• Re-appointment of Harry Pomeroy to the water policy advisory committee.
