ENMU spikers grab first LSC win

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team got a pair of firsts when it outlasted Midwestern State in a five-set thriller at Greyhound Arena Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds, unsuccessful in their first six tries, netted their first Lone Star Conference match win, a 25-19, 25-20, 15-25, 15-25, 19-17 win over the Mustangs.

The Saturday victory equaled a weekend split for the Greyhounds, combined with their Friday night 25-23, 25-17, 25-20 loss to Texas Woman’s.

No further information was available from the Saturday victory at press time.

The victory for ENMU (3-12, 1-6) also gave Katie Burnett her first win on the Greyhound sidelines. Burnett was elevated from assistant to interim head coach two weeks prior after coach Sia Poyer took an indefinite medical leave of absence.

Now, after snapping a seven-match losing streak, the Greyhounds will try to create a winning streak on the road. They face Angelo State 6 p.m. Friday and Lubbock Christian 1 p.m. Saturday.

Against Texas Woman’s — The Greyhounds held the Pioneers to a .161 hitting percentage, but never found their own offensive rhythm with a .113 percentage and 19 errors.

The first set trended toward the Greyhounds early, after kills by Jasmine Gannon and Lauryn Bresnahan staked the Green and Silver out to a 4-0 lead. But the Pioneers caught up, and finished the first set off with an 11-5 run.

A back-and-forth second set turned the Pioneers’ way with an 11-4 run, and Texas Woman’s (6-7) scored nine of the final 15 points in the third set after the teams had played to a 14-14 tie.

Noboby reached double figures in kills for hte Greyhounds, though Bresnahan and Sarah Tuioti-Mariner each had nine. Tabitha Spray and Addison Mulroney had seven kills each for the Pioneers, while Bailey Wozniak had 26 assists.
