Students seek travel approval

PORTALES — After beating the best New Mexico had to offer, a quartet of Portales High students is ready to take on the nation.

They just need the permission of the Portales school board, and they’re a shoo-in to get it when the board meets 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Portales Municipal Schools administration building.

Approval is sought for out-of-state travel for the FFA floriculture team, with departure Oct. 29 for the national competition in Indianapolis and a return date of Nov. 2.

The team — composed of seniors Abi Cameron, Alyssa McAlister and Emily Newberry and junior Rylie Courtney — earned the national bid by winning the state competition in early April. Portales High ag teacher Jerry Faver is the FFA advisor.

Other items on the Monday agenda include:

• A set of 15 various budget adjustment requests.

• A first reading of policy manual changes for staff orientation and training, technology resouce usage, student discipline and hrrassment/bullying prevention.

• A funding report on the district’s state bilingual multicultural education program.

• Acceptance of donations for school supplies, bottled water during the city’s boil water advisory and a Musette piano.
