Cheptoo takes 10th, ENMU women finish fourth at Fort Hays

FORT HAYS, Kans. — Thanks to a 10th-place finish from Evaline Cheptoo, and four Greyhounds finishing in the top 30, Eastern New Mexico’s women’s cross country team managed a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Fort Hays State Open.

Cheptoo finished the race in 18:35.2, helping the Greyhounds score 110 team points to finish just behind the host Tigers (107).

Southwest Baptist got a 1-2-3 finished headlined by sophomore Elysia Burgos’ 17:23.4, and edged Colorado School of Mines 40-43.

Other Greyhound women’s runners on the day included Aminata Kenyawani (18:43.5, 14th), Neri Getraide (19:05, 25th), Kayla Sisneros, (19:13.6, 28th), Mason Swanson (19:34.2, 46th), Amalia Delgado, 20:06.8, 57th), Vindiana Ruiz, 20:08.6, 59th), Caroline Bachman, 20:51.8, 72nd), Lauren Griego (21:12.9, 80th) and Sierra Quinones (21:23.2, 87th).

In the men’s competition, the Greyhounds finished 10th out of 11 teams with 303 points.

Colorado School of Mines had three of the top six runners, including medalist Derek Steele (24:08.9), to cruise to first place with 31 points.

Running for the Greyhounds were Jessie Madrid, 25:39.2, 30th) 71. Jon Fuentes (27:01.8, 71st), Alejandro Chavez (27:19.6, 79th), Toby Kirk (29:38.2, 127th) and Shane Rinde (29:57, 129th).

The Greyhounds are off next week before heading to Silver City for the Lone Star Conference championships.
