Melrose moves to 13-0 with sweep of Vixens

MELROSE — Top-ranked Melrose remained unbeaten on Thursday night, posting a 25-15, 25-12, 25-11 District 1-6A volleyball win over Fort Sumner.

Senior Nataley Montragon led a balanced attack for the Lady Buffs (13-0, 4-0 district). It was the sixth consecutive sweep for Melrose, which has lost just three sets all season.

Senior Deajha Downey added 10 kills, while senior Brette DeVaney chipped in nine kills and added 18 digs. Also, junior Hailey Martin collected seven kills and six blocks and nine digs, while sophomore Johanna Roybal had 16 assists and junior Pyper Belcher notched five aces and 14 assists.

Melrose defeated the Vixens in two games in the junior varsity preliminary.

Melrose returns to action on Tuesday at home against Tucumcari.

Texico sweeps pair — The Texico Wolverines were road warriors on the week, sweeping Lovington on Tuesday and repeating the feat Thursday at Clayton to open District 7-2A play.

Ashley Hill had 25 kills over the two matches, leading the Wolverines with 13 against Lovington and a dozen against Clayton. Sydnee Muse had six kills in each match.

Rachel Phipps posted six aces in the 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 win over Lovington, and had 22 assists in the 25-4, 25-9, 25-13 defeat of Clayton.

The Wolverines (8-6, 1-0) hosted Pecos Saturday afternoon, and this week take on Estancia on the road Tuesday before hosting Santa Rosa Thursday.
