FORT SUMNER — The Texico Wolverines appear to have a stranglehold on the Class 2A District 6/7 race.
Quarterback Gabe Dickerman scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth, and the Wolverines (5-4, 2-0 district) held on for a 26-20 win over Fort Sumner Friday.
Texico expanded a 14-13 halftime lead to seven on a 30-yard scoring pass from Dickerman to Anders Nelson in the third period. After Fort Sumner scored to tie it at 20 early in the final segment, the Wolverines struck back later in the period.
“We just kind of held on from there,” Texico coach Bob Gilbreath said.
Fort Sumner’s last chance ended on a lost fumble with about two minutes to go.
Dickerman rushed nine times for 84 yards and two scores, and completed 9-of-16 passes for 98 yards.
The Wolverines aim to clinch an outright district crown Friday against Santa Rosa.
Floyd 60, San Jon/Grady 18
SAN JON — Finally, the Floyd Broncos earned a win on the field.
Floyd took the lead for good late in the first quarter, then blanked San Jon/Grady the rest of the way in rolling to a 60-18 6-man District 1 win on Friday in the season finale for both teams.
San Jon/Grady (3-6, 1-3 district) held an 18-14 lead before the Broncos (2-5, 2-2) mounted their dominating comeback. Floyd’s other win this season came at the expense of Roy/Maxwell, which forfeited its season due to lack of numbers.
Coach Todd Horton said the Broncos, who have had only seven players available at times this season, doubled that number against San Jon/Grady with 14 playing — including four who were eligible for the first time this season.
“It was kind of a glimpse into the future,” Horton said. “We’ve been playing most of the year with seven or eight players, and today we had 14.”
Sophomore Ricky Ramirez ran for three touchdowns and threw for another for the Broncos, while senior Cobe Correa also ran for a pair of long scores.
Elida 60, Hondo 6
HONDO — The Tigers capped an unbeaten season, making short work of the Eagles. Coach Jereme Woodruff said it was the first perfect season in any boys sport in the history of the school.
“It was a good game,” Woodruff said. “Our defense played really well. Hondo is a young team.”
The highlight play of the game was a strip-sack on the quarterback by sophomore Rylan Creighton, who returned it for a touchdown. Meantime, junior Tegan Burton threw touchdown passes covering about 50 yards to seniors Colton Ferguson and Will Haley.
Elida should be the top seed in the upcoming six-team playoffs in 6-man, thus early a first-round bye into the semifinals.
Melrose 56, Gateway Chrisitan 0
ROSWELL — The Melrose Buffaloes ended the night knowing they would be out of the running for the District 3 title, but still put on a performance that should help in the eight-man seeding a week from now.
Tatum, which beat the Buffaloes two weeks ago, secured the district title with its 50-0 win Friday over Logan. The Coyotes (7-1, 4-0) will clinch the district title after its game against Dora Friday — outright with a win or via tiebreaker with a loss.
The Buffaloes (7-1, 3-1) end the regular season at Mesilla Valley Friday.
Attempts to reach Melrose coach Caleb King were unsuccessful.
