Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Last week of regular season mixed bag

The final week of regular-season soccer for area teams brought some of the OK and some of the could-be-better.

First the OK. On Wednesday, Clovis’ girls team played its last regular-season game — home or otherwise — and ended in a 0-0 tie with Roswell.

Junior keeper Hanna Nussbaumer took care of Clovis’ part of the shutout, notching three saves for the Lady ’Cats, while working 100 minutes in goal.

Clovis finished the regular season 10-5-4 overall, 2-1-3 in District 4-5A play.

Now the could-be-better. Clovis’ boys team concluded its regular season on Friday, with a 2-0 loss at Roswell that dropped the Wildcats to 1-5 in District 4-5A, 11-7-2 overall.

It was a scoreless game at halftime, but the Coyotes got second-half goals from seniors Samuel Calvillo and Jonathan Brackeen, with assists from sophomore Garrette Barron and Calvillo.

Senior Estevan Mata was the game-winning goalie, recording three saves on his way to the shutout.

Roswell improved to 3-3 district, 13-7 overall.

On Tuesday, Portales’ boys team lost 2-1 at home against Artesia and dropped to 2-14 overall, 0-5 District 4-4A. The Rams had hope early, leading 1-0 at halftime before the Bulldogs put in two unanswered goals in the second half.

The Portales girls team hadn’t yet played this week going into Saturday afternoon’s regular-season finale at Goddard. The Lady Rams carried 3-11 overall, 0-5 district, records into that game.
