ENMU women seeking 3-0 start

PORTALES — After a successful opening weekend in the LSC/RMAC Conference Challenge last weekend at Durango, Colo., the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team gets back in action with a 5 p.m. tipoff today against NAIA member Northern New Mexico at Espanola.

ENMU has dominated the Lady Eagles (1-6) in the three previous meetings in the series, winning by an average margin of 28 points. Last season, the Greyhounds posted a 104-44 rout over NNMC at home.

At Durango, the Hounds opened their regular season on Friday by beating New Mexico Highlands 78-66, then came back for a 69-62 victory over host Fort Lewis on Saturday. ENMU led wire-to-wire in both games.

Sophomore post Alivia Lewis scored 30 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and collected six blocks in the two games, while senior post Natalie DeLonge also scored 30 points for the weekend and sophomore guard Zamorye Cox of Portales added 23 points. The Hounds notched a whopping 101-64 margin on the glass in the two contests.

Meantime, ENMU’s next outing on the men’s side is in a 7 p.m. exhibition on Friday at Division I Texas-El Paso.

The Hounds dropped a pair of tight ones in the Challenge, losing to Highlands 112-108 in OT on Saturday night and to Fort Lewis 90-85 Sunday.

Senior guard Devin Pullum led the Hounds with 33 points in the two games, while three others also averaged in double figures for the weekend.

The Hounds have certainly been tested in the early going. This will be the last of three exhibition games against NCAA Division I competition for the season, with losses at 2019 Sweet 16 qualifier Tennessee 107-59 on Oct. 30 and at New Mexico 92-71 on Nov. 5.

UTEP carried a 1-0 record into a Tuesday home matchup against New Mexico State.

After Friday’s game, ENMU returns to action on Nov. 23 for its Lone Star Conference opener at rival West Texas A&M, scheduled for a 3 p.m. (MST) tipoff. The women’s game that day is set for 1 p.m.

ENMU squads do not play at home until December, with the women hosting Northern New Mexico in an 11 a.m. start on Dec. 5 and the men welcoming Wayland Baptist two nights later in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
