Three Hounds pick up LSC honors

RICHARDSON, Texas — Two days after scoring a big upset in Lone Star Conference play, Eastern New Mexico University scored a three-for-three in the LSC’s weekly player awards.

The Monday release from the league office designated ENMU’s Paul Terry as offensive player of the week, Mazin Richards as defensive player of the week and Tyler Vargas as speical teams player of the week.

All three played key roles in the Greyhounds’ 20-17 overtime win against then-No. 21 Angelo State.

Monday marked the first time any LSC team has claimed all three weekly awards in the same week.

According to the release:

• Terry, a senior from Amarillo, broke the school’s single-season rushing record via a season-best 233 yards on 40 carries. With a game remaining in the season, he stands at 1,681 yards rushing and is second in Division II. He has hit the century mark in all 10 of ENMU’s games. The 40 carries matched the single-game record he set earlier this season.

• Richards, a freshman defensive end from Burleson, Texas, recorded 3.6 sacks to push his LSC-leading total to 10. He had six tackles on the night for the Greyhound defense, which held Angelo State to 265 total yards.

• Vargas, a senior from San Diego, hit what turned out to be a game-winning 39-yard field goal. He went 2-for-2 on field goals, including a 46-yarder in the second quarter, to put his LSC-leading total at 13. Vargas also averaged 40.7 yards on three punt attempts with one inside the 20.

The awards are the sixth, seventh and eighth weekly awards won by the Greyhounds. It is the second weekly award each for Terry (previous, Oct. 7) and Vargas (Oct. 21).

The Greyhounds (6-4, 4-4 LSC) conclude the season Saturday at Western Oregon.

Hounds get one AFCA vote — Eastern New Mexico’s overtime win over Angelo State was enough for one vote in the American Football Coaches Association poll on Monday.

The Greyhounds received one point in the weekly poll, which included a total of five LSC schools either in the top 25 or the also receiving votes category.

Angelo State, previously 21st, dropped down to the receiving votes category following its 20-17 overtime loss at Greyhound Stadium. The Rams received 24 points overall and were the only school to fall out of last week’s top 25.

Tarleton State is in third with a pair of first-place votes, and Texas A&M-Commerce was at 23rd. West Texas A&M was in the receiving votes category with three points.

Valdosta State remained No. 1 with 28 first-place votes, following by Ferris State and the Texans.
