Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Holiday weather looks threatening

Holiday travelers beware — the weather leading up to Thanksgiving this Thursday is looking treacherous.

Rain, snow and ice are in the forecast before things begin clearing up on Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service is predicting 2 to 4 inches in snowfall tonight for the Clovis and Portales area.

“It’ll be the whole winter mix,” said NWS Meteorologist Todd Shoemake. “Freezing rain, sleet and snow that will likely continue into Thursday morning.”

Showers may continue into Thursday night before finally winding down and drying up come Friday and leading into a dry weekend.

The NWS advises travelers to be prepared with emergency equipment such as snow shovels, flashlights and something to gain traction if stuck, such as cat litter.

NWS also on Tuesday issued a high wind warning, expecting wind speeds between 55 and 60 mph for the Curry and Roosevelt County areas. Large amounts of dust are expected with potential power outages.

Temperatures are expected to cool down today with highs expected to be in the mid-40s. Come evening, a rapid increase in precipitation will bring rain that may shift back and forth from snow.
